Dear Student,

Have Fun In Vancouver and learn English at the same time!

When you come to Vancouver, you will be flying into the Vancouver International Airport (YVR).  Be sure to get a window seat on the plane.  You will love the view of the city with the mountains to the north.  It is easy to see why Vancouver is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Upon entering the airport terminal, be sure to take some time to explore the airport and see great native art …

  • The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, The Jade Canoe by Bill Reid.  The bronze sculpture with legendary   Haida creatures provides the focal point to the entrance of the International Terminal.
  • Great Wave Wall.  Representing one of the major factors contributing to Vancouver's uniqueness - the ocean.  The art glass also creates an appropriate ambiance for Bill Reid's masterpiece, the bronze sculpture The Spirit of the Haida Gwaii, The Jade Canoe.
  • The Spindle Whorl, located in the Arrivals Hall of the International Terminal.  The contemporary style in this Spindle Whorl image depicts two eagles, two human forms, salmon and the moon, sun and earth.
  • Coast Salish Welcome Figures about six metres tall.  Portray an inspiring welcome for all arriving passengers.

Do you need to do some shopping?  Have a look at all the great shops at the airport … clothing, music, personal care, souvenirs & gifts, Vancouver 2010 Olympic Merchandise and more.

After you have settled into the hotel or family home, you will have some time to look around.   Go ahead and look!

Walk Around.  Enter some shops.  Explore.

Get your bearing for the area that you will be living.   If you can, grab some tourist information available.  In the brochures you will find lots of valuable information on different activities available.

There is lots to see and do.  During your stay you will want to see all of the main attractions like …

  • Stanley Park.  Stanley Park is an evergreen oasis of 400 hectares (1,000 acres) close to the downtown core. Its natural west coast atmosphere offers a back drop of majestic cedar, hemlock and fir trees.
  • Gastown.   Gastown is a mix of "hip" contemporary fashion and interior furnishing boutiques, tourist-oriented businesses, restaurants, nightclubs, and upscale housing.
  • Granville Island.  Granville island is a magical place.  Located in False Creek, a short boat ride to Yaletown.
  • Queen Elizabeth Park.  The Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park is one of the most popular attractions in Vancouver and is open daily, rain or shine.  It is dedicated to the wonders of the natural world with an emphasis on plants and birds.
  • Capilano Suspension Bridge spaning 450 feet across and 230 feet above the spectacular Capilano River.

And if you are really adventurous and want to really explore … How about a weekend trip to:

  • Chill at Harrison Hot Springs.  The lakeside village of Harrison Hot Springs makes for a nice, quick getaway just an hour and a half away from Vancouver.
  • Make tracks at Whistler.  Novice and experienced mountain bikers will like the steep drops and jumps at the Whistler Mountain Bike Park.
  • Paddle or kayak the Cariboo.   Enjoy the great outdoors and enjoy the amazing scenery.

Getting Around Vancouver Is Easy.

We have a great transit system with buses and light rapid transit.  You will quickly learn how to use transit to get around.  Or, if you prefer, you can rent a car for your stay as well.  Reaching our school is fast and simple – we are a few steps from the bus stop.

Vancouver is home to people from around the world.  There are over 70 different languages spoken by the people of Greater Vancouver.  You will have a lot of opportunity to practice your new English skills with native English and non-native English speakers during your stay in Vancouver.

We have a very good culinary scene.  Many of the world’s best chefs are locating to Vancouver.  We love our food!  Japanese, Chinese, American, Greek, Thai and more!  You can even try the exotic flavours in Indian or Iranian.  We have many restaurants available to fit your budget for the trip.

When you come to Oxford, you will be able to pick up some of the same tourism brochures available throughout the city.  Our staff will be happy to help you plan your trips.   If your classmates want to do a group activity all together we can help you arrange it.

Oxford is nestled at the foot of Heritage Mountain.  Nearby is Scott Creek with crisp, clear water coming down the mountain.  One kilometre away is Rocky Point Park at the eastern edge of Burrard Inlet with its ocean breezes.  Nearby we have Buntzen Lake with it’s sandy beach and lots of hiking trails to explore.   We will help you in choosing fun and exciting things to see and do during your stay.

On your first school day, be sure to arrive about 30 minutes before your class start time.

  • You will be introduced to the staff and other students.
  • We will help you settle in and provide you with your school supplies.
  • We will review with you the school policies and answer all of your questions.
